While rosacea is a common skincare issue, that doesn’t make it any easier to live with. If you have rosacea, you are familiar with the emotional stress and anxiety it can cause, as well as the discomfort. At Pinnacle Dermatology & Skin Rejuvenation, our rosacea treatment options can help you manage your symptoms, as well as improve the appearance of stubborn bumps caused by this condition.

What is Acne Rosacea?

Rosacea is a skin condition that results in redness and visible blood vessels in the face. It is actually quite common and may produce small, red, red-filled bumps on the face that may resemble acne. Rosacea symptoms may flare for weeks or months at a time and then go away for a period of time.

Common symptoms of rosacea include:

  • Redness and visible blood vessels on the central face.
  • Swollen, red, or pus-filled bumps.
  • Hot and tender skin.
  • Dry, irritated, or swollen eyelids.
  • An enlarged nose over time.

The cause of rosacea is unknown but is thought to be due to a combination of both hereditary and environmental factors. There are also certain things that cause a flare-up of rosacea, including hot drinks or spicy foods, alcohol, extreme temperatures, exercise, certain emotions, or even cosmetic products.

Acne Rosacea Treatment Options

While there is no known cure for rosacea, there are treatment options to control and minimize the signs and symptoms. These include:

Oral Antibiotics: Antibiotics can be used to treat the bumps and pimples associated with moderate to severe rosacea. Be sure to tell Dr. Gray if you are pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant, as any of the antibiotics prescribed for your rosacea should not be taken.

Oral Acne Drugs: For severe rosacea that has not responded to other treatment methods, isotretinoin may be an option. This acne drug is potent and helps to clear up the bumps associated with rosacea. However, it should not be used if pregnant.

Topical antibiotics: A number of topicalantibiotics are available to help reduce the inflammatory lesions and redness of rosacea.

Topical Drugs for Reducing Redness: A cream of gel of Brimonidine or oxymetazoline to reduce redness may be prescribed for mild to moderate rosacea. These medications work by constricting blood vessels to combat redness.

Laser treatments: Laser treatments with the Vbeam, IPL, or Theraclear can help reduce the inflammatory lesions, redness and visible blood vessels on the face, neck and chest.

Lifestyle Remedies for Rosacea

There are also some steps you can take to help control the symptoms of rosacea and prevent flare-ups. These include identifying and avoiding possible triggers, protecting your face by regularly wearing sunscreen, and treating your skin gently. Avoid over-exfoliation and skin care products that contain alcohol or other irritating ingredients.
