What is Acne?

Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when your hair follicles become clogged with dead skin cells and excess oil. While acne is most common in teenagers, it can affect people of any age.

There are several different types of acne, including:

  • Papules (small, red bumps that do not contain pus).
  • Pustules (bumps that do contain pus).
  • Nodules (small bumps under the skin that may be skin-toned or red in color).
  • Cysts (red, tender soft fluctuant cysts deep underneath the skin).
  • Whiteheads (an closed skin pore that is plugged with oil and dead skin cells).
  • Blackheads (a open skin pore that is plugged with oil and dead skin cells).

Causes of Acne

Acne can be caused by many different factors including excess sebum production, bacteria, inflammation, and hair follicles that are clogged by oil and dead skin cells. It can be genetically inherited as well. There are also things that can trigger or cause acne to worsen, including changes in hormones, certain medications, diet, and stress.

Acne Treatment Options

There are a large selection of acne treatment options available today. The specific treatment that is best for you will vary depending on your health history, hormone levels, severity of your acne, and the type of treatment you desire. At Pinnacle Dermatology & Skin Rejuvenation, we offer the following options:

Antibiotics: For treatment of moderate to severe acne, oral antibiotics can be an effective option to reduce bacteria. Oral antibiotics should only be used for a short time and should be combined with other drugs such as benzoyl peroxide in order to prevent antibiotic resistance.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids & Beta Hydroxy Acids: Glycolic acid (AHA) and Salicylic acid (BHA) are both effective in cleansing excess oil, unclogging pores, and may even assist in fading dark spots left behind from acne.

Benzoyl Peroxide: Can be used topically to mildly dry the skin and reduce clogged pores. allowing easy cleansing of excess dirt and oil – remove It also has an antibacterial effect.

Retinoids: Are often used for moderate acne and are available as lotions, gels, and creams. They work by preventing your hair follicles from becoming plugged with oil and skin cells. However, retinoids will increase your skin’s sensitivity to the sun, so sunscreen must be worn when outdoors.

Isotretinoin: This medication, also called Accutane, isa derivative of vitamin A. It can be a good option for those with moderate or severe acne who have not seen results with other treatments or who have signs of scarring.

Other Medications: There are also a variety of other medications that can be used to treat acne in specific cases. These may include combined oral contraceptives and anti-androgen agents such as spironolactone for women who have not seen results with other treatment methods or who have hormonal flares.
