Prolonged exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays can result in hyperpigmentation, brown spots, or age spots that can cause self-consciousness for those living with them. If you have tried over-the-counter creams and remedies but just can’t seem to achieve results, we have the solution for you! Skin resurfacing laser treatments are the fastest and most effective option for brown spot and age spot removal.

What is Brown/Age Spot Removal?

In order to effectively treat brown spots or age spots, laser resurfacing is used. This treatment option works by employing advanced laser technology to target unwanted sun damage and spots. This laser energy causes them to slowly fade over time through the body’s natural healing process, resulting in a clearer, more even skin tone.

Who is a Good Candidate for Brown/Age Spot Removal?

Those with lighter skin tones and lighter or smaller age spots can often see the quickest results. However, multiple treatments can be effective for treating larger and darker age spots as well. Patients with darker skin tones have a higher risk of healing with hyperpigmentation, but should be assessed on a case-by-case basis. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding or have a history of keloid scarring, you should not receive this treatment. The best way to determine if laser resurfacing for age spots is right for you is through a consultation appointment with Dr. Gray.

The Brown/Age Spot Removal Treatment

During your brown/age spot removal treatment session, we will offer you a topical anesthetic to ensure that you are comfortable during the procedure. Then, the skin of the targeted area will be cleaned, and the laser will be used to emit light energy onto the skin. Each laser resurfacing treatment may differ slightly depending on the type of laser (ablative or non-ablative), as well as the depth of the laser. Treatment time may vary depending on the number and size of your brown spots.

In most cases, only 1-2 treatments are needed for ideal results. However, a series of treatments may be required to address darker, larger spots.

Brown/Age Spot Removal Results

Following your brown/age spot removal treatment, you may experience some discoloration in the treatment area. After a few days a crust will form over, which should fall off after a couple of weeks. While there is no downtime needed, we do recommend avoiding prolonged sun exposure without SPF, strenuous activity, and alcohol consumption for at least 24 hours after treatment.

Your treated lesions do not usually reappear following treatment, however, brand new spots can appear over time. In order to maintain your results, be sure to apply sunscreen when spending time in the sun to prevent future sun damage and hyperpigmentation.
