When we experience scarring, it can cause many emotions like unhappiness, stress, anger, and low self-esteem. When these scars are on the face, these emotions can be even stronger. The face is the first thing that people notice when meeting us, which is why those with facial scarring can feel self-conscious. At Pinnacle Dermatology & Skin Rejuvenation, we offer a number of treatment options to diminish the appearance of your facial scars, so you can feel more confident in your skin!

What are my Treatment Options for Facial Scars?

When we injure ourselves and break the skin, the skin will begin to naturally heal itself. During this process, the skin produces collagen to heal the area, which can result in a scar. Depending on the amount of collagen your body creates during the healing process and the cause of your injury, your body can form different types of scars. These may include keloid scars, contracture scars, hypertrophic scars, acne scars, and flat red, hyper or hypopigmented scars.

At Pinnacle Dermatology & Skin Rejuvenation, we offer the following treatment options to improve facial scarring:

  • Excision.
  • Scar subcision.
  • Steroid injections.
  • Dermal fillers.
  • Laser skin resurfacing.
  • Chemical peels.

Who is a Good Candidate for Facial Scar Treatment?

If you are bothered by the appearance of a scar on your face, facial scar treatment may be a good option for you. However, if you have blood clotting disorders, viral or bacterial infections at the treatment site, or have an autoimmune disorder, you may not be the best candidate.

Because we offer a number of different techniques, we will work with you to find the best treatment option to diminish your scarring. The best way to determine which treatment is right for you is through a consultation appointment with Dr. Gray. Contact our office today to get started!

The Facial Scar Treatment Process

The facial scar treatment process will look different depending on the treatment option chosen. These may include:

Excision: This is often done to improve the appearance of a scar and includes removing the scar with an incision. Stitches are used to help close the wound, resulting in a thinner, straighter scar.

Scar Subcision: This technique is great- remove for treating acne scarring. It involves inserting a small needle into the scar, which releases the acne scar from the underlying tissues. This allows the indented skin to become more level with the rest of the skin, diminishing the appearance of the scar.

Steroid Injections: For some scars, especially hypertrophic and keloid scars, steroid injections can be used. This may decrease the thickness of the scar, as well as decrease the redness, burning, and itching that keloid scars may create.

Dermal Fillers: To fill in depressed or concave scars, dermal fillers can be used. Most dermal fillers are made of hyaluronic acid (HA), which is used to add volume beneath the skin, resulting in a smoother surface.

VBeam Laser: The Vbeam laser targets the redness and blood vessels in scars. Treatments will diminish red scars and help flatten hypertrophic scars.

Laser Skin Resurfacing: Lasers can be used to smooth scars, remove abnormal coloring from a scar, and flatten out a raised scar.

Chemical Peels: Chemical peels can be used to improve the appearance of mild scarring by removing the topmost layers of the skin and stimulating collagen production.
