Have you developed scaly growths that range from tan to black as you have aged? If this sounds familiar, you may have seborrheic keratoses. While these growths are not harmful to your health, they can be uncomfortable or cause cosmetic distress. At Pinnacle Dermatology & Skin Rejuvenation, we perform a number of procedures to remove these growths for a more comfortable you.

What is Seborrheic Keratosis?

A seborrheic keratosis is a noncancerous, harmless skin growth that develops over time. They usually appear as brown, tan, or black in color, and may appear scaly or waxy and slightly raised.

It is not known what causes seborrheic keratoses, however, they tend to run in families and may grow on areas that have been frequently exposed to the sun. You may also be more likely to develop these growths if you are over the age of 50.

Common signs and symptoms of seborrheic keratoses include:

  • Round or oval shape.
  • Is flat or slightly raised.
  • May have a rough textured or scaly surface.
  • May be itchy.
  • Ranges in color from pink to white, or tan to brown to black.
  • Have a waxy, “pasted on” appearance.

Who Can Benefit from Seborrheic Keratosis Treatment?

Seborrheic keratoses are not harmful or dangerous to your health, so individuals who are unhappy with the appearance of these growths can benefit from treatment. Many patients also choose to have them removed because they often get caught on jewelry or are irritated easily by clothing. Seborrheic Keratosis Treatment Options

Because seborrheic keratoses are not harmful to your health, treatment is not required. However, many people do choose to have them removed for cosmetic reasons or if they become irritated easily by clothing. There is a selection of treatment options available, including the following:

Cryotherapy: Includes freezing the growths with liquid nitrogen. This will call the seborrheic keratosis to blister or peel.

Curettage: During this technique, Dr. Gray uses a device called a curet to scrape away the damaged cells. This may be followed by electrosurgery, where a tool that emits an electric current is used to destroy the affected tissue. Local anesthesia is used to ensure your comfort.

Electrocautery: this procedure uses a high frequency electric needle to superficially burn off the keratoses. The lesions can be numbed prior to this procedure for comfort.

Laser Therapy: An ablative laser can be used to destroy the seborrheic keratosis, allowing new and healthy skin to appear.
