The Do’s and Dont’s of Recovery from an Injectable Appointment

Injectables include neuromodulators like Botox and Xeomin or hyaluronic acid dermal fillers like Juvéderm. At Pinnacle Dermatology, we offer a wide range of injectables that can improve fine lines, moderate to severe wrinkles, and volume loss. Although down time and recovery after injectables are minimal, there are a few things to keep in mind.

What to Do After Injectables

Soothe Discomfort

Mild bruising, swelling, and discomfort are common after injectable treatments. These symptoms will reduce within a few days but to alleviate discomfort in the meantime, you can apply an ice pack or cold compress and take over-the-counter pain medication as needed such as acetaminophen/Tylenol. Aspirin, Advil, Ibuprophen and Aleve should be avoided for 10 days before filler injections and for 48 hours after to prevent bruising.

Although there is no downtime required for Botox and dermal fillers, you should avoid strenuous activity for the first 24 hours. Let your Botox appointment be a relaxing day for you and take it a little easy after your appointment.

What Not to Do After Injectables

Avoid Sun Exposure

Sun exposure and intense heat may worsen swelling and this swelling could take additional days to improve. Sun exposure as well as saunas and tanning beds should be avoided for a few days after your appointment.

Wait to Exercise

Strenuous activity can also worsen swelling or bruising around the injection sites. Avoid cardio and strenuous activities for at least one day after your injectable treatment. If you have a labor-intensive job, you will likely need to take the rest of the day off.

Avoid Alcohol

Alcohol can act as a blood thinner which will increase your risk of bruising and swelling. Some may develop a headache after Botox injections and alcohol could worsen these effects.

Don’t Lie Down

Keeping your head elevated for a couple of hours after an injectable treatment will limit bruising. You are fine to lay down after that. Be aware that filler will not migrate away from the injected area after treatment.
