What is Atopic Dermatitis?

Atopic dermatitis, also known as eczema, is a chronic skin condition that causes itching, redness and dry patches. While it is very common in children, it can affect individuals of all ages. It is not contagious but can be bothersome to those who live with it.

Common symptoms of atopic dermatitis include:

  • Dry, pink, itchy skin.
  • Small, raised bumps that may leak or crust over.
  • Red or brown patches.
  • Thick, scaly skin.
  • Raw, swollen, or sensitive skin from scratching.

What Causes Atopic Dermatitis?

This condition is related to a gene variation that hinders the skin’s ability to provide protection against irritations, bacteria, and allergens. For some children, food allergies may be a factor that causes eczema. Overall, the main risk factor is having a family history of atopic dermatitis, hay fever, or asthma.

Atopic Dermatitis Treatment Options

There is no known cure for atopic dermatitis, but there are treatment options to help relieve symptoms and prevent outbreaks.

Topical Corticosteroids: Corticosteroid creams or ointments can be applied directly to the skin to block inflammation, constrict blood vessels to reduce swelling, and combat bacteria.

Calcineurin Inhibitors: These creams affect the immune system to aid in controlling eczema reactions.

Oral Corticosteroids: For more severe cases of atopic dermatitis, oral corticosteroids such as prednisone may be effective. However, they cannot be used long term.

Biologic Medications: The FDA has approved a topical and an injectable biologic medication. The topical is Eucrissa, and the injectable is called Dupixent to treat moderate to severe eczema. These medications work by targeting proteins called interleukins, which are involved in the cause of inflammation. While Eucrissa and Dupixent work to calm the overactive immune system, they do not suppress the immune system.

Lifestyle Remedies for Atopic Dermatitis

There are also some measures that you can take at home or throughout your daily life to help soothe your inflamed skin. These include keeping the skin moisturized, applying nonprescription hydrocortisone creams to temporarily relieve itching, taking a warm bath with ¼ cup of bleech or colloidal oatmeal, using mild soap and skincare products, taking oral antihistamines to help with itch, and treating stress of anxiety which can worsen symptoms.
