Our body naturally contains collagen, a protein that is one of the main building blocks for skin health. Unfortunately, as we age, collagen production declines, which can lead to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles, dull skin, and reduced skin elasticity. Microneedling is an effective treatment option which works by stimulating your natural collagen production, resulting in a more evenly-toned and youthful complexion.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling, also sometimes called collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive procedure performed to treat a variety of skin concerns.  A special microneedling device will be used, which contains many small needles. These needles will create controlled micro-injuries in the treatment area, stimulating the body’s natural healing process, which includes the creation of elastin and collagen. Growth factors and stem cells can also be used along with the treatment to help further improve the look and feel of your skin.

Microneedling can be used to address the following:

  • Acne scarring.
  • Fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Skin pigmentation issues.
  • Uneven skin tone.
  • Reduced skin elasticity- remove
  • Stretch marks. – remove
  • Large pores.
  • Dull skin.

Who is a Good Candidate for Microneedling?

Adults who are looking to achieve a more even, radiant, and youthful complexion can benefit from microneedling. However, if you have active acne or eczema, or psoriasis at the treatment site, are prone to keloid scarring, have a history of cold sore breakouts, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, microneedling may not be the best treatment option for you. The Microneedling Treatment

Prior to your treatment, you may be asked to stop using topical retinoids or certain medications such as blood-thinners. This will help to ensure that you enjoy the best possible results.

During your microneedling treatment, topical numbing cream will be applied to ensure you are comfortable. Then, the microneedling device will be used to create micro-wounds in the skin, stimulating collagen and elastin production. A serum or calming treatment may then be applied. Treatment can take 10-30 minutes to complete, depending on the size of the targeted area. For best results, most people require multiple treatment sessions, though this will depend on your individual goals.

Microneedling Results

Common side-effects following microneedling include redness, swelling, mild bruising, and skin sensitivity, which will resolve over the next couple of days. Your skin will be the most sensitive for the first 48 hours after treatment, so it is very important to wear sunscreen when outdoors to avoid sunburn. Also, avoid hot water and excessive exercise for at least 48 hours. Skin exfoliants and scrubs should not be used for two weeks after treatment.

Following your treatment, your skin will work fairly quickly to create new epidermal skin, with noticeable results seen after a couple of weeks.
